How to Caramelize Onions: Your Patience Will Be Rewarded

Caramelized onions are so rich and sweet and buttery, they elevate any recipe to the next level. I have been making caramelized onions for years. It’s kind of my thing. And I have gotten it down to a science. They are so flavourful and delicious and I pretty much can’t have a burger without caramelized onions anymore. I have been ruined. They take a few minutes but they are so worth it.

Caramelized Onions: The Ultimate Burger Topping

Look at that burger- am I right?! Nothing beats a homemade burger in the summer, that is for sure. See this post for my formula for the ultimate Fully Loaded CheeseburgerSpoiler alert: a fully loaded cheeseburger includes: Jamaican jerk aioli, homemade ketchup, cheddar cheese, caramelized onions, lettuce, tomato, avocado, and pickled jalapenos all on a flourless rosemary bun! With a homemade dill pickle on the side, of course. They are messy but oh so good.

There is a sandwich I get at one of our favourite restaurants sometimes that is chicken, brie, garlic mayo and this apple/caramelized onion confit. It is To.Die.For. I am going to try to re-create it on one of my flourless buns and see if I can get close to the flavours of that sinful sandwich.

Caramelized Onions: Recipe Tips and Variations

In addition to the perfect homemade burger with caramelized onions (I am drooling right now just thinking about that burger), I also like to put caramelized onions on my salmon and on pizzas or flatbreads. Also stay tuned for my caramelized onion dip- it’s delicious!

This recipe works well with most types of onion so use whatever you have on hand. I don’t get the best results with red onion though, so save those for salads and just use regular yellow, white or sweet onions.

These caramelized onions will last in the fridge for a month or so (if they last that long) in a tupperware with a tight lid. I like to make a double batch and keep some in the freezer so I can have caramelized onions on a whim.
