Spicy Butternut Squash Curly Fries
These spicy curly fries are crispy, delicious and so fun to eat! It’s the best way to get all the health benefits of butternut squash into your day and they are kid-friendly! Just adjust the cayenne pepper if you are going to serve these to little ones.
5 Ingredient Spicy Butternut Squash Curly Fries:
All you need for this recipe is a butternut squash and 4 common spices that you probably have on hand: cayenne pepper, paprika, garlic powder and onion powder.
Get Out Your Spiralizer!
You do need a spiralizer for this recipe to turn your squash into curly fries. I have an inexpensive one that I use all the time for zoodles with meatballs, chicken zoodle alfredo (coming soon!) and chicken zoodle soup (coming soon!).
To turn your butternut squash into curly fries, you can either peel it (or not) and then put it on your spiralizer with the narrow end at the blade. Then crank out your curly fries until you get to the wide end of the squash and stop there. Transfer your curly fries to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone mat. Sprinkle with spice mixture. Bake in a hot oven or in your air fryer for 15-20 minutes.
What to do with the “Butt End”?
When spiralizing your butternut squash, you will be left with the “butt end” that is full of seeds and pulp. You can remove the seeds and pulp from the remaining end of the butternut squash and use that part for another recipe.
I usually pop it in the Instant Pot and then make Healthy Molten Lava Chocolate Cake or Chocolate Fruit Dip with it.
What Dip is Best with Spicy Butternut Squash Curly Fries?
The classic choice for french fry dip is ketchup, obviously. I haven’t found a sugar-free ketchup in the store that both tastes good and is made from a decent sweetener. (They are all sweetened with sucralose- yuck!) So I usually make my own ketchup, which is easier than you think.
My other favourite french fry dip is Jamaican Jerk Aioli, which is spicy and delicious. In addition to being a great dip (for french fries or veggies), I also use it on my hamburgers, on top of salmon and to make chicken salad. Yum!
The recipes for both my Homemade Ketchup and my Jamaican Jerk Aioli are both on this post for Fully Loaded Cheeseburgers. Enjoy!
Spicy Butternut Squash Curly Fries Tips and Variations:
- Instead of butternut squash, make these spicy curly fries with carrots, turnips, rutabaga, daikon radish, celery root or jicama (or do a combination of different vegetables for a colourful, pretty curly fry plate!)
- You can drizzle some olive oil on top before baking if you like.
- Sprinkle some Parmesan cheese on top right when they get out of the oven so it melts a little bit.
- Serve these in parchment paper (or newspaper) cones for a fun presentation.
- Cook these in your air fryer! It still takes about 15-20 minutes, but it doesn’t heat up your whole kitchen!
