Homemade Fajita Seasoning

Homemade Fajita Seasoning

You will never go back to store-bought fajita seasoning once you try this easy, delicious and inexpensive homemade version.

Store-bought seasoning mixes are one of those things that just kind of give me the creeps. They are usually made of mostly corn starch and probably saw dust with a bit of spices and a lot of salt, sugar and MSG to make it taste better. And they are also $3 or $4 each for a little packet. I never buy them myself anymore because I think they are so silly plus it is so easy to make your own!

Storebought Fajita Seasoning VS. my Homemade Fajita Seasoning

Storebought Fajita Seasoning Ingredients:

My (delicious) Homemade Fajita Seasoning Ingredients: chili powder, paprika, garlic powder, oregano, salt, pepper

Fajitas are one of my favourite meals for 3 reasons.

Reason #1 to Love Fajitas: the Fajita Bowl Option

First, you can have your fajitas in a wrap if you want or you can have a fajita bowl and eat it with a fork and it is still delicious. You can still top your bowl with sour cream, cheese, guacamole, salsa or whatever you like.

You need to try the cilantro lime sour cream from my Fish Taco Bowl recipe. (I eat my fish tacos in bowl form too!)

Reason #2 to Love Fajitas: the Freezer Meal Option

Fajitas are so easy to turn into a freezer meal. What I like to do is prep everything in advance (but not cook it) and store it in a large zip bag in the freezer. Then, I take it out of the freezer the night before I am going to make them and let it thaw in the fridge. When I make them fresh for supper that night, it doesn’t taste like a freezer meal, it tastes like a fresh meal but all the prep work is already done.

Reason #3 to Love Fajitas: So Many Ways to Prepare

The third reason is that you can make them so many different ways. The classic way is on the stovetop, which is quick but takes a bit of attention. You can also throw everything in the oven for half an hour or so. Or my new favourite way is to throw it in the air fryer for about 8 to 10 minutes. I have also tried making fajitas in the Instant Pot for 10 minutes (with everything in a trivet so it’s not sitting in the water) but the texture is a bit soggy and not as good as stovetop, oven or air fryer. But in a pinch it works too!

  • 2 tbsp paprika
  • 2 tbsp garlic powder
  • 2 tbsp sea salt
  • 1 tbsp oregano
  • 1 tbsp black pepper

Instructions

Recipe Notes

You can adjust the amounts of everything as long as you keep the ratios the same. For example, if you want a smaller quantity of fajita seasoning, use teaspoons instead of tablespoons.

  • We love fajitas! It s one of my favorite dinners to make for my kids and despite the fact there is onion and bell peppers in it, by kids will eat it all up because it s that good! The seasoning is what makes it so good. The flavor is outstanding! Every time we have fajitas for dinner they ask why I don t make it more often. lol

    • We love them too! And I love that you can easily turn it into a freezer meal and do all the prep in advance. Great for a quick weeknight supper.
